DUBLIN, IRELAND 2008 - Third Circular

Dear Colleagues

Thank you for your responses to our first two circulars and for submitting abstracts for oral presentations and posters at this years SPPC and SVPCA symposia. With less than two months to go, it's clear that SVPCA 2008 is going to be a fun meeting - the schedule for the week remains the same as advertised in the 2nd circular

This 3rd Circular provides additional information for delegates planning to attend this year; it's also certainly not too late to register if you are still interested in coming along to join us in Dublin! We can also still accept abstracts for poster presentations, up until the end of July as space for these at the meetings is (almost) unlimited.

Registration deadline:

The deadline for registration payments for the symposia is the 31st July. For information on how to pay as well as the costs for the 2008 symposia and for the conference dinner, please see the 2nd Circular.

If you require a receipt for your registration payment prior to the meeting please email Matthew Parkes (mparkes@museum.ie). Otherwise we will issue receipts in mid-September.

Abstracts, lists of speakers and presentation schedule:

Formatted and lightly edited versions of the conference abstracts will shortly be posted online at the conference website, alongside a provisional schedule for oral presentations and social events. Please do check the online version of your abstract for any glaring errors (these will be printed in mid-August, so please notify Gareth Dyke (gareth.dyke@ucd.ie) in good time if there are issues with your abstract). The 4th circular, mailed in early August, will contain the final conference schedule.

Presentation formats:

Oral presentations for SPPC will take place in the lecture theatre of the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) while those for SVPCA will take place in the Ceramics Room of the Archaeology and History Museum (National Museum of Ireland). All presentations should be assembled in PowerPoint (NB: no other presentation facilities are available). Although all versions of PowerPoint are supported by our systems, whether created on Mac or PC, you are strongly urged to send us a CD of your presentation in advance of the meeting (mail to: Gareth Dyke, School of Biology and Environmental Sciences, University College Dublin, Belfield Dublin 4, Ireland).

Although the offical languages of this years symposia are Irish and English, we expect that all presentations will be in English. Please inform the organising committee ahead of time if you wish to present as Gaeilge!

A special issue of the journal Historical Biology is planned for mid-2009 to contain papers presented at this years SVPCA meeting. Please speak to Gareth either beforehand, or during either symposium, if you would like to avail of this chance to get your presentation peer-reviewed and published in good time.

Poster boards:

A series of standard-size poster boards are available for poster presentations. Posters will be on display in the tea and coffee area of the SVPCA conference (Education Resource Room, Kildare St) for the duration of the meeting. SPPC posters will first be displayed at the GSI (on the 2nd September) and then will be moved to Kildare St for the SVPCA meeting.

Conference field trip(s):

As outlined in the 2nd Circular, we are offering three options for field excursions on Saturday 6th September. Please let us know before the 31st of July if you would like to take part in one of the conference excursions (the cost of these are included in the conference registration).

Jones-Fenleigh Memorial Fund Auction:

The annual charity auction in aid of the Jones-Fenleigh fund will take place in the evening of Thursday 4th September (expertly handled, as usual, by skilled auctioneer Leslie Noč). Please remember to bring along your donations (or mail them to Gareth Dyke [address above] in advance of the meeting). Our annual bursaries from the Jones-Fenleigh Memorial Fund for attendance at SVPCA rely on the money raised from these donations! (so bring along your loot on the day!).

Finally, if you …
